PRE-SWIM GLUCOSE SUPPLEMENTATION DOES NOT AFFECT ENDURANCE-SWIMMING PERFORMANCE

The effect of pre-exercise glucose ingestion on endurance-swimming performance (4000 m) was assessed. Male triathletes (N = 10) performed a swimming trial following the consumption of a) 10% glucose solution five minutes before exercise, b) 10% glucose solution 35 minutes before exercise, and c) a similar volume of placebo.
A significant glucose difference before exercise was observed. Performance, post-exercise blood glucose, and average heart rate were similar after exercise.
Implication. Pre-performance glucose supplementation does not affect endurance-swimming performance.
