NO ADVANTAGES WITH GEL FORM OF CARBOHYDRATE
Bourdas, D., Moir, G., Salisbury, I., Badman, P., & Cochrane, T. (2001). Is gel form carbohydrate supplementation improving glucose profile? Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 33(5), Supplement abstract 939.
Ss (N = 8) ingested carbohydrate in gel or liquid form before resting and exercising (70% VO2max on a treadmill).
The gel did not produce a better glucose release profile than the liquid form for either resting or exercise conditions. The gel was perceived as being unpleasant in taste and was not easier to swallow in exercise.
Implication. Gel carbohydrate is no better than the liquid form.
