DIET CHANGES WHEN INGESTING SWEETENED CREATINE

The purpose of this study was to determine if consuming a carbohydrate (CHO) containing creatine supplement affected the dietary intake of trained university swimmers (N = 14). Two beverages were consumed for five days, i) 21 g of creatine monohydrate and 136 g of dextrose or a placebo (136 g dextrose). Food records were collected for three days before, and for the five days during the loading phase.
CHO intake for the combined groups was significantly higher during the loading phase when compared to the pre-loading phase. The additional CHO in the supplements was partly, but insignificantly, offset by a lower consumption of food CHO during the loading phase. Caloric intake was also higher in the loading phase.
Implication. Studies investigating creatine effects need to take into account the effects on performance of added CHO.
