MUSIC DOES NOT SEEM TO MAKE WORK EASIER

Pujol, T. J., Langenfeld, M. E., Pujol, K. J., Wilken, B. J., & Huskey, J. A. (1999). Effects of music on ratings of perceived exertion and lactate. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 31(5), Supplement abstract 999.

"A strong relationship exists between RPE and blood lactate concentrations. Studies have also found that the RPE for a give level of work will decrease when music accompanies exercise." (p. S214) This study assessed if music would affect RPE at a fixed blood lactate concentration or at lactate threshold.

No significant difference was found for RPE at 4 mM or lactate threshold.

Implication. Music did not affect RPE for fixed metabolic markers.
