PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES ARE NOT AN AVENUE FOR IMPROVING AEROBIC FITNESS IN FEMALE STUDENTS

Exercise and energy expenditure in physical education classes featuring floor hockey and basketball were objectively measured in high school females (N = 9). It was found that the duration of the activity was sufficient (35 minutes) but the intensity of exercise was generally insufficient to promote an aerobic benefit.
Implication. Physical education classes that program game-like activities that allow the exercise intensity to be controlled by participants are unlikely to produce aerobic fitness in females.
