MILD HYPOHYDRATION DOES NOT AFFECT PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASURES IN COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENTS
Kenefick, R. W., Mattern, C. O., Mahood, N. V., Anderson, S. E., Degroot, D. W., & Kertzer, R. (1998). The effect of hydration state on lactic acid threshold in highly trained males and females. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 30(5), Supplement abstract 627.
Nordic skiers (M = 8; F = 6) performed two discontinuous treadmill bouts to exhaustion in a 22 degrees Celsius environment under conditions of euhydration (normal hydrated state) and hypohydration (-4% body mass).
There were no differences between the genders in either condition for any of the variables measured. There were no differences in lactate threshold, oxygen uptake, or ratings of perceived exertion between conditions.
Implication. Mild hypohydration does not appear to affect physiological responses in comfortable exercise environments.
