NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TREADMILL AND SWIMMING TEST RESULTS

Nagle, E. F., Robertson, R. J., Chomentowski, P. J., & McLaughlin, K. J. (2006). Absence of relation between 12-Minute and 500-yard swim and treadmill determined maximal aerobic power. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 38(5), Supplement abstract 2674.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between 12-minute and 500-yard swim tests and VO2max in college recreational swimmers (M = 17; F = 30). On separate non-swim training days, Ss participated in two treadmill tests (one orientation and one actual) to determine VO2max. On separate days following the treadmill tests, two swimming trials (one practice and one actual) of 500-yard freestyle and 12-minute swims were conducted.

There was no significant relationship between treadmill VO2max and both the 12-minute and 500-yard freestyle swimming performances.

Implication. The lack of a relationship between treadmill and swimming tests indicates that if physiological testing is to be performed, it should be activity specific.
