RESISTANCE-TRAINED HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES DO NOT BENEFIT FROM CREATINE

Quackenbush, A., Locascio, F., Gorman, M., Wygand, J., & Otto, R. M. (1999). The effects of creatine supplementation on muscular strength and body composition of high school athletes. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 31(5), Supplement abstract 357.

Male high school athletes (N = 23) participated twice weekly in a total body resistance training program for six weeks. Ss were divided into groups: creatine supplementation (N = 8), placebo (N = 9), and a no activity control (N = 6).

Both activity groups increased in muscular strength and body composition but creatine supplementation did not significantly impact the magnitude of the changes.

Implication. In high school athletes, creatine supplementation does not enhance the effects of resistance training.
