Gould, D., Greenleaf, C., Chung, Y., & Guinan, D. (2002). A survey of US Atlanta and Nagano Olympians: Variables perceived to influence performance. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 73, 175-186.

US Atlanta Olympians and US Nagano Olympians were surveyed by rating how particular variables influenced their Olympic performances. The following were perceived to be of greatest influence:

• Performance - preparation for distractions and loss of composure;
• Team variables - cohesion, positive coach-athlete relationships;
• Coaching - coach's ability to deal with crises and coaching expectations;
• Family and friends - general social support, getting event tickets for family and friends; and
• Environment - venue transportation difficulties, village distractions.

Implication. These findings supported the conclusions of earlier works and published inventories about athlete experiences in sports. They suggest general emphases for mental skills development.
