COLLEGIATE ATHLETES NEED TO ATTEND TO FLUID INTAKE

Poule, K. A., & Volpe, S. L. (2001). Assessment of hydration status of collegiate athletes. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 33(5), Supplement abstract 1442.

Male (N = 138) and female (N = 125) collegiate athletes were evaluated before practice for hydration status.

Thirteen percent of athletes were considered dehydrated, 69% were normally hydrated, and 17% were well hydrated. Males were significantly more dehydrated than females. Females did not differ in hydration status for different stages of the menstrual cycle.

Implication. Collegiate athletes need to be encouraged to attend to their fluid intake.
