YOUNG FEMALE SWIMMERS NEED NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

Henriquez, M. M. George, V. A., & Castellanos, V. H. (2001). Eating attitudes and weight control behaviors of adolescent female swimmers. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 33(5), Supplement abstract 1603.

This study assessed the dietary patterns and attitudes of young competitive swimmers (N = 13) and synchronized swimmers (n = 16) using the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and selected questions from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

Synchronized swimmers showed a significantly higher risk of developing an eating disorder than did the competitive swimmers. Swimmers were generally unaware of their daily calorie intake. The coach was the first person approached by swimmers for dietary advice. Half the swimmers indicated they were trying to control their weight through diet and additional exercise (an unnecessary practice during a period of growth and development).

Implication. Young female swimmers need improved nutritional information.
