MECHANICAL WORK AT ANAEROBIC THRESHOLD DECREASES WITH RISES IN TEMPERATURE

Tyka, A., Zuchowicz, A., Kubica, R., & Palka, T. (2000). Effect of ambient temperature on mechanical power at anaerobic threshold. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32(5), Supplement abstract 678.

This study compared mechanical power, physiological and thermal responses at lactate threshold, and integrated electromyographic anaerobic thresholds in men (N = 15) at temperatures of 23, 31, and 37 degrees Celsius.

It was found that mechanical power decreased at lactate thresholds as temperatures rose. There was a very close relationship between the physiological and electromyographic thresholds at all temperatures. It was suggested that electromyographic anaerobic threshold is a practical and valid method for anaerobic threshold determination.

Implication. As temperature rises, the mechanical work at lactate threshold decreases.
