RUNNING AND BLOOD RED CELL PROPERTIES

Janssen, G. M. E., & Delahaye, L. M. J. (1993). The effect of running on red blood cell parameters. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 25(5), Supplement abstract 308.

Running of more than 70 km/wk leads to mechanical damage and possibly destruction of erythrocytes. Replacing an amount of training with deep water running can reduce that. Running is very damaging while other activities may not be so severe. One cannot generalize equal amounts of destruction through exercising with different activities.

Implication. The destructive nature of excessive training is particularly individual.
