STRENGTH TRAINING INHIBITS AEROBIC ADAPTATION IN FEMALES

Gravelle, B. L., & Blessing, D. L. (1995). Physiological adaptation in women concurrently training for strength and endurance. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 27(5), Supplement abstract 1098.

Endurance training followed by strength training in normal females undergoing a training program failed to increase VO2max. There also was a suggestion that anaerobic system changes were enhanced by the same sequencing of activities.

Implication. When endurance and strength training are mixed, it is likely that endurance responsiveness will be suppressed and anaerobic responsiveness enhanced.
