NICOTINE HAS NO EROGENIC EFFECT ON MUSCULAR POWER
Meier, J. N., & Albrechtsen, S. J. (2007). Effects of nicotine on muscular power in collegiate football players. ACSM Annual Meeting New Orleans, Presentation Number, 2584.
This study evaluated the effects of nicotine on muscular power in collegiate football players using a Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT). Collegiate football players N = 12) participated in two exercise sessions and performed the WAnT during each. In one exercise session, Ss chewed nicotine gum for 30 minutes before performing the WAnT. The same procedure ws followed in the other session except that Ss chewed placebo gum for 30 minutes.
There were no statistical differences between the nicotine gum and placebo gum conditions for Peak anaerobic power, anaerobic capacity or anaerobic fatigue.
Implication. Nicotine has no ergogenic effect on muscular power as tested by the Wingate Anaerobic Test.
