ENERGY DRINK DOES NOT AFFECT AEROBIC PERFORMANCE

Umana-Alvarado, M., & Moncada-Jiminez, J. (2005). The effect of an energy drink on cycling performance in male athletes. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 37(5), Supplement abstract 207.

Young trained cyclists (N = 7) performed three 50-km intermittent cycling trials. Time trials (1 km) were performed within the set at 20, 32, and 48 km, as well as 4-km time trials at 20 and 40 km. During the second and third total trials, Ss ingested 200 ml of either and energy drink or a placebo.

There was no significant performance difference between conditions.

Implication. A small supplemental energy drink during an extended aerobic performance did not affect performance.
