ABSOLUTE POST-EXERCISE LACTATE VALUES OVERESTIMATE LACTATE CHANGES
Berthoin, S., Pelayo, P., Baquet, G., Marais, G., Allender, H., & Robin, H. (2002). Plasma lactate recovery from maximal exercise with correction for variations in plasma volume. Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, 42, 26-30.
Males (N = 16) performed an incremental and maximal exercise to reach maximal aerobic power. Before, during (2, 5, 12, 30 minutes), and at the end, blood samples were collected. Lactate measures were absolute and corrected for changes in plasma volume.
It was found that maximal changes in plasma volume were related to maximal lactate measures. Maximal lactate values were 17.3% higher than corrected lactate values.
Implication. Changes in plasma volume must be taken into account when peak post-exercise plasma lactate concentration or lactate recovery curves are analyzed.
