GENDERS REACT DIFFERENTLY TO CREATINE SUPPLEMENTATION

Stride, D., Chilibeck, P. D., Burke, D. G., & Farthing, J. (2002). Gender differences in response to twice-a-week creatine supplementation during resistance training. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 33(5), Supplement abstract 817.

Males (N = 11) and females (N = 10) performed moderate resistance training under a creatine supplementation and placebo condition. The creatine dose was 0.2 g/kgBW twice per week. Ss engaged in periodized resistance training (12 exercises, 3-4 sets, 4-10 repetitions) four times per week for six weeks.

Males on creatine increased muscle mass significantly more than males on placebo. There was no difference between female treatment groups in muscle mass gains. Females increased more in bench press strength than did males. There was no alternation in leg press strength.

Implication. There are likely to be different gender reactions to creatine supplementation when strength training.
