PRE-MOVEMENT ISOMETRIC CONTRACTIONS IMPROVE REACTION TIMES

Etnyre, B., & Kinugasa, T. (2002). Postcontraction influences on reaction time. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 73, 271-281.

Ss (N = 12) performed 20 trials each on control and post-3s-isometric-contraction conditions. The exercise in both conditions was a learned, rapid, knee-extension in response to an auditory stimulus. Muscle activity was recorded from the quadriceps muscle group.

Reaction time factors of premotor time, motor time, and average RT were significantly better after the contraction than in the control condition.

Implication. In activities where reaction time is important (starts in most competitive events), it would be helpful to perform a short isometric contraction before making the starting movement.
