INCLINED RUNNING AFFECTS POSTURAL STABILITY (BALANCE)

Wade, L. R., & Weimar, W. (2003). The influence of incline sprint training on unilateral balance. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 35(5), Supplement abstract 1474.

Ss (M = 14; F = 10) were tested under flat and inclined running conditions. Single leg balance was evaluated pre- and post-treatment conditions using four 10-sec trials under both eyes open and shut conditions.

It was found that balance degraded significantly after inclined running. Postural instability was increased.

Implication. The amount of inclined running used for training sprinters should be monitored closely. Increased postural instability could lead to injury.
