ANDROSTENEDIONE APPEARS QUICKLY IN THE BLOOD AFTER INGESTION

McGregor, S., Armstrong, W. J., Yaggie, J. A., & Kolazinski, S. (1999). Blood hormone concentrations after buccal administration of androstenedione in healthy young males. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 31(5), Supplement abstract 460.

Healthy young males (N = 6) ingested either 2 mg/kg of androstenedione (andro) or a placebo on two separate occasions. Blood samples were taken before, and at 20, 40, and 60 minutes after, ingestion.

Blood levels of andro were elevated within 20 minutes but there were no significant elevations of free testosterone or estradiol. Values for the latter two measures were rising and could possibly reach significant levels over a longer period than that evaluated in this study.

Implication. The ingestion of androstenedione causes a quick rise in andro concentrations in the blood.
