WHEN ANAEROBIC TRAINING PRECEDES AEROBIC TRAINING

Moore, S., Allen, R., Gallop, A., & Padfield, J. A. (1998). Effects of prior weight training exercise on fuel utilization during aerobic training. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 30(5), Supplement abstract 1138.

Moderately trained Ss (M = 9; F = 7) preceded a 20-minute aerobic treadmill run at 60-70% VO2max by either no exercise or a 6-exercise (10-12 repetitions to fatigue) weight training circuit.

There was a shift toward greater fat utilization during aerobic work when anaerobic weight training preceded it.

Implication. Anaerobic work before aerobic work stimulates more fat utilization when performing aerobically.
