L-GUTAMINE DOES NOT EXTEND PERFORMANCE IN HIGH-INTENSITY EXERCISE

Haub, M. D., Potteiger, J. A., Nau, K. L., Zebas, C. J., & Webster, M. J. (1997). Delaying the onset of fatigue: Influence of L-Gutamine ingestion. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 29(5), Supplement abstract 1094.

L-gutamine ingestion alters acid-base balance by increasing production of the bicarbonate ion. Trained males (N = 10) performed 5 x 60-s bouts of cycling at 100% VO2max with 60 s recovery periods in between trials. Performances were under L-gutamine or placebo conditions.

L-gutamine ingestion did not prolong high-intensity exercise performance.

Implication. L-gutamine does not appear to extend performance in high-intensity exercise.
