The effects of fluid intake on plasma volume, osmolality, body temperature, and performance during intense swimming training were observed.
Ss (N = 8) performed 20 x 50 m repetitions of swimming on a 1-minute interval with and without fluid intake.
When taking fluids, performances were significantly better and oral temperatures lower. There were no differences in plasma volume or osmosis.
Implication. Ingesting fluids frequently during swimming training will promote better performances and lower body temperatures. Frequent sipping of water or a low-osmotic commercial fluid should be a normal part of training.
