MIRACLE SPORTS WATER BETTER THAN GATORADE FOR REPLENISHMENT

Girandola, R. N., Bassin, S. L., Yang, R. D., & Bharne, A. (1997). Gastric emptying of fluid replacement in healthy volunteers: A randomized prospective comparison of two commercial beverages. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 29(5), Supplement abstract 763.

After an overnight fast, Ss (N = 21) were tested for gastric emptying time of two commercial replacement beverages (Gatorade (G) and Miracle Sports Water (MW)).

Under standardized conditions, it was found that in a 15 min period 16 Ss emptied more MW (259.6 ml) than G (156.6 ml). In a second study that involved exercising in a sauna similar results were obtained.

Implication. It is recommended, for exercises of short duration performed in the heat, that Ss consume beverages of low osmotic concentration (e.g., Miracle Sports Water) to ensure rapid replenishment of lost fluids.
