FLUID RESERVOIRS PREFERRED BY RUNNERS

Clements, J. M., Casa, D. J., McClung, J. M., Knight, J. C., Harvard, W. R., Hipp, G. R., & Blake, A. S. (2000). Fluid replacement during trail running in the heat: Hip-mounted water bottles vs hip-mounted reservoir. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32(5), Supplement abstract 904.

Heat-acclimated distance runners (N = 16) performed three trail runs with no water, two hip-mounted water bottles, or a water reservoir. Few physiological variables differed between the two hydration methods. Ss preferred the reservoir method.

Implication. A reservoir storage and delivery system is preferred by athletes although its effects are no different to those of traditional water bottle storage and fluid delivery.
